3D Fractals (Z = Z² + C)

Computer generated Fractals are amazing in many ways - they are full of cascading colorful shapes, symmetrical patterns and intricate details. Until recently Fractal renderings were always 2D and flat, with no perspective or shadows. Thanks to recent advancements with mathematics and faster CPUs, we can now render amazing 3D Fractals!

What are 3D Fractals?
3D Fractals are a projection of the 2D Mandelbrot set, made possible using a very creative 3D spherical coordinate system. Many 3D Fractals are infinitely detailed - It is possible to zoom in forever, finding new sculptures and landscapes just like with 2D Fractals! All of the images in this collection were created using a software application called Mandelbulb 3D. Although no longer under development, this software is still my favorite application and tool of choice for creating 3D Fractals.
About
I have always been fascinated by the infinite complexity and beauty of Fractals. They are an awesome visualization of complex math, and lots of fun to explore/navigate. Since discovering 3D Fractals several years ago I have been totally addicted, making it my goal to push the limits of what is possible using 3D Fractal software. Thousands of hours were spent tweaking formulas, adjusting lighting/colors, and rendering the images in this collection!
Source files for each scene are very small (3KB), including just variables which define formulas and parameters for the 3D Fractal (Scene Lighting, Color Assignments and Camera Coordinates). Combine these input parameters and a raytracing engine with volumetric lighting/global illumination and the result is a beautiful photo-realistic image with incredible detail, geometric symmetry, vibrant colors and natural shadows.
Each set of input parameters generates a Fractal universe that is full of interesting shapes, sculptures and detail. Exploring these landscapes can be very addicting, there are literally trillions of unique geometric variations that can be generated using different formula combinations!
